(ARC [American Red Cross] Photo by Wold) 64-5050."
Note also reads: "Old Harbor's recovery from the havoc created by the Good Friday earthquake and seismic waves occupies a prominent place in the history of the American Red Cross Disaster Service.
"The Villagers, Aleut natives of Kodiak Island, fled to high ground when the waves wrecked their homes. On Saturday morning, March 28, they were ferried to Kodiak Naval Base aboard two crab boats, the Fern and the Chacon. Navy planes took them to a shelter near Anchorage.
"A month later the Aleuts were back on the island through the cooperative efforts of Red Cross, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Land Management, the U. S. Public Health Service, and many other agencies, organizations and individuals. Red Cross and the Bureau of Indian Affairs shared the cost of the air transportation from Anchorage to Kodiak.
"On their return, the natives found snug, warm tent homes on wooden frames. The first returning group landed on May 1. Red Cross supplied tools, building materials, household essentials, food and clothing, free of charge.
"Within a few hours after their arrival, the Aleuts were hard at work, finishing the jobs started by the advance party. By Sunday, May 3, all of the natives were back in Old Harbor. That evening, as though their lives had not been disrupted by disaster, the Aleuts gathered for their traditional Russian Orthodox Easter Services." | UAF-1972-152-122 |
