| | | George King Collection, Album 1. | Aeronautics; Bush pilots; Gold mining; Expeditions & surveys; Air pilots; Animals; Churches; Soldiers; | The George King Collection describes in photographs and manuscript material early aviation in Alaska. There are two series in this collection. The first series consists of five photograph albums and two folders of loose photographs. The second series is made up of diaries, correspondence, scrapbooks, and miscellaneous material.
The Photograph albums (Series One) cover the years from approximately 1915 through 1964. Some of the major areas covered in the albums are aeronautics and mining. Of particular interest are the photos and clippings on the search for Carl Ben Eielson who was not only a renowned Alaskan bush pilot but a partner and personal friend of George King. There are photographs of aeronautic expeditions such as the Wilkins Arctic Expedition, bush pilots including Joe Crosson and Carl Ben Eielson, and scenes from around Alaska. There is a series of photographs of European scenes taken while George King worked for the Junkers Corporation. There are also scenes from Russia when he was in that country coordinating an over-the-pole flight; while there, he was instrumental in helping to organize the Russian search effort for Carl Ben Eielson. George King was a member of the "Ancient and Secret Order of Quiet Birdmen" and Series Two contains that order's handbook and other materials pertaining to the organization. | UAF-1988-131-CO1 |

| | | Postcard of an unidentified building | Buildings; | Title by indexer. Postcard of several unidentifed buildings.
One of our sites visitors identified the building by comparing other photographs in our collection and others and states "The building being called 'unidentified' is the Tanana Valley Railroad Depot. It later became the A.E.C. Depot and finally the Alaska Railroad Depot. It served as the AKRR Depot until their new one was built in 1920 behind this one. The old log structure (building) in the upper right of this photo was, at one time, The Miners Restaurant. The railroad track location shown in this photo is now Driveway Street, which is across from today's OLD 1960 AKRR depot." | UAF-2005-10-8 |
