| | | Sign at site of future Capitol. | Cities & towns; Government facilities; Capitols; Mountains | Sign reads:
This is the site for Alaska's Capitol building paid for
in part by the citizens of Juneau.
In 1910 Congress appropriated $200,000 for its construction, which
being at first delayed was definitely postponed at the outbreak
if the War until the return of peace.
In this connection the Secretary of the Treasury on Jan-
uary 15, 1918, made the following declaration and promise:
"Had the War not come to America, there would have been no
necessary delay in the construction of this building. It will
be progressed as rapidly as possible after the return
of peace."
The citizens of Juneau relying upon the good faith of the
government made of a mining camp a capital city by expending
hundreds of thousands of dollars in erecting business houses,
banks, hotels, public school, the city hall and many splendid
residences.
Good faith as well as public necessity now | ASL-Juneau-Capitol-Building-1 |
