Headdress

wood
. The
slightly
rectangular
back
plaque
is
convex
vertically
and
concave
horizontally
. The
face
of a
young
woman
is
carved
in
high
relief
in the
central
part
of the
rectangle
. The
face
is
bordered
on the
sides
and
top
by
rectangular
pieces
of
abalone
shell
set
in a
red
painted
bordered
. The
area
between
the
inlay
and the
face
is
painted
blue
(Rickett's
laundry
bluing
?)
The
face
has
hair
,
eyebrows
and
eye
orb
outline
painted
black
with
red
painted
lips
. On the
forehead
is
a
cross
of
inlaid
abalone
shell
,
across
the
nose
and on the
face's
right
cheek
is
a
slanted
line
of
abalone
inlay
and on the
left
cheek
is
abalone
inlay
of
intersecting
lines
. The
pupils
of the
eyes
are
circles
of
inlaid
abalone
inlay
. At the
inner
corner
of the
left
eye
is
an
area
where
the
carver
cut
through
leaving
a
slightly
crescentric
hole
. There are a
number
of
abalone
inlays
missing
. The
adhesive
appears
to have been a
hide
glue
and
red
sealing
wax
. The
frontlet
was
tied
to its
headdress
framework
through
pairs
of
holes
in the
back
plaque
under
the
chin
and on
either
side
approximately
where
the
ears
would be.
