Description |
Katexac, Bernard (artist). Wooden mask, painted orange-brown. Measures 24 x 17 x 8.7 cm. The forehead protrudes above the face, cut at a 90 degree angle above the eyes, which are small round holes. The nose is prominent, triangular and flat at tip, with two black-outlined nostrils that extend through to the back of the mask. Cheekbones are both prominently carved, circular, in relief. The upper lip protrudes below the nose and is angular and slightly pointed in the centre. Lower lip extends out from the face, with a shallow furrow in the centre by the mouth, and pointed slightly distally. Nostrils are painted black while rest of surface is painted in ochre. Leather strap is attached to back of mask at either side through niched holes.¬ulture: Inupiaq |
