Description |
Simeonoff, Jacob (artist). This bentwood visor has a decorative painted surface. The visor has an open-crown design, a long squared-off front, and two overlapping pieces at the nape that are stitched together with imitation sinew and reinforced with an adhesive. The exterior surface of the wood is painted in typical old-style patterns and vibrant colors (black, maroon, teal, bright orange, and ivory). The interior surface is painted maroon. From the inside surface, the thinning of the wood at the bends is evident. The PL side of the crest of the hat has sea lion whiskers attached in a vertical position. Blue and white beads are strung onto the bases of the whiskers. White feathers are attached. On the PR side of the visor, towards the back, is a piece of walrus ivory attached horizontally with five feathers attached vertically through it, and beads accentuate it. A vertical piece of walrus ivory, similar in shape to a harpoon head, is attached to the PL side, near the back. Running down the center of the hat are several attachments of beads and ivory. Tied to the inside of each side are braided ties that hang down. Overall measurements of the visor are: 38 (with whiskers) x 28 x 51 cm. |
