Description |
The wooden mask is carved in an elongated oval shape, with a polished smooth surface. The wood is very dark in color. The face shows arching brows and a small ridge running vertically on the forehead from between the eyes to the top of the mask. The mask has almond-shaped eyes that are recessed along the edges and then pierced in the center (approx. 0.5 cm in diameter). The nose is narrow and widens at the base to look like whale flukes. The nostrils are nearly vertical and closely spaced in the center. The mouth is small and slightly down turned, raised along the edges. The back side of the mask is more roughly carved, deeply excavated at the openings (eyes, mouth, nose) but maintaining a thickness to the wood throughout the mask. Each side of the mask (near the wearer's ears) is a small hole, presumably for a strap to attach to the wearer's head. Measures 25.5 x 15.5 x 4.5 cm. Found at the Great Midden, Point Hope, Alaska.¬ulture: Inupiaq |
