[April Mon 2]
speech at Opera House for
Grosscup just returned from Washington.
Says that he talked with President in Senator
Fosters presence - about my appointment to the
Alaska Judgeship. The President expressed
satisfaction as to my qualifications & inquired
if I would take the Dist. Attyship. After
further conversation he bluntly asked
Grosscup if I would accept the place of
Consul General at Kanagawa, Japan.
G_ promised to ascertain. At his suggestion,
I have just mailed letter to Senator Foster
refusing to accept Atty. in Alaska, but saying
that I would consider it an honor & compliment
to be appointed U.S. Judge in Alaska or
Consul General in Kanagawa.
