As I was walking opposite the Treasury
Bld. on 15th St. this morning I met
Vice President Fairbanks and he
stopped me to inquire how I was getting
along - he said I was in good shape
in the Senate, he thought, with more friends
than ever, - that the only danger was that
my opponents might talk it over
from time to time & thus get it over
the session. He was friendly & seemed
to want to encourage me - & did -
Dr. Whitehead & I called on Roberts
Director of the Mint - he promised to
get Dolliver into line for me.
Presented my quarterly act. to
Mch. 31 including all expenses
to Washington, hotel bill, printing,
&c. to the Dept. of Justice for payment
- they raise some question about the
printing but seem to concede the rest.
Got salary for April - $416.66.
Matters look pretty good, but
what a wail it is - I wish I had
that old square heads thumb between
my teeth - I'd make him move faster.
