" From

caption
: "A
surprise
to the
village
of
Mekoryuk
and an
opportunity
for the
authors
was the
appearance
of a
musk-ox
right
up
behind
the
Reindeer
Project
.
Such
a
sight
is
rare
and
seldom
does
a
musk-ox
stray
far
from its
herd
. At
first
this
musk-on
[sic]
was
pretty
scary
but
it
soon
got
used
to the
children
and
photographers
and
it
wasn't
long
before
one
could
get
fairly
close
before
the
musk-ox
charged
and
everyone
dispersed
. There are
about
40
head
of
musk-ox
on the
island
. They were
moved
to
Nunivak
Island
by the
Fish
and
Wildlife
Service
as the
wolves
of
mainland
Alaska
were
making
great
in-roads
into the
musk-ox
population
.
Nunivak
Island
is
the
only
place
in
Alaska
that
musk-ox
can
be
found
and they are
under
strict
protection
by the
Fish
and
Wildlife
Service
who
make
frequent
check-ups
on the
well-being
and
condition
of the
herd.
