Description
Title
taken
from
caption
. From
May's
journal
,
dated
June
29th
: "By
evening
we
had
reached
False
Pass
,
which
flows
between
the
Bering
Sea
and the
Pacific
Ocean....Beyond
the
Pass
lay
Round
Top
,
Isnotski
[sic]
and
Sheshaldin
[sic]
, the
three
most
spectacular
mountains
that
I
have
ever
seen
.
Sheshaldin
[sic]
is
the
largest
active
volcano
in
Alaska
.
We
were
fortunate
in
being
able
to
see
it
, as the
clouds
lifted
just
as
we
came
abreast
of
it
.
It
was
smoking
and
sending
forth
a
fine
plume
of
smoke
.
Although
the
mountains
are
only
seven
,
eight
and
nine
thousand
feet
high
they have the
appearance
of
being
twice
as
high
,
rising
up
straight
from the
water."--
