Description
View of two workers climbing the dome atop a "White Alice " facility at Cape Chiniak , on Kodiak Island , Alaska . White Alice was a form of radar built by the U.S . Air Force in the mid 1950's . Built during the height of the Cold War the U.S . Air Force meant these White Alice sites to warn against incoming enemy aircraft and to control responding U.S . fighters . The Cape Chiniak site was never activated , due to advances in technology that allowed the Middleton Island site to provide better coverage for the area . The Cape Chiniak facility was completed in the fall of 1957 and provided Kodiak Island with long-distance telephone service until satellites took over in the 1970's . 1950's .
