.
Description
Title

Photograph
of an
amphibious
jeep
with a
75mm
recoiless
rifle
mounted
on the
back
on
parade
at the
1947
Fairbanks
Winter
Carnival

.
Mr
.
Taylor
states
: "The
vehicle
shown
is
not a
Ford
GPA
amphibious
jeep
, but
rather
a
Studebaker
M29
Weasel
fully-tracked
amphibious
vehicle
. These
vehicles
were
originally
designed
for
special
operations
in
Norway
, and their
very
low
ground
pressure
gave
them
great
mobility
over
snow
(which
I
would
assume
is
one
of the
reasons
this
vehicle
would be in
Alaska
postwar)
. The
easiest
way
(but
not the
only
way)
to
identify
this
vehicle
as a
Weasel
is
by the
instrument
panel
to the
right
of the
driver
-
the
amphibious
jeep
had a
conventional
instrument
panel
in
front
of the
driver
and a
passenger
seat
beside
the
driver's
seat.
