Description
Title taken from the back of the photograph . " Seal skin pokes and walrus skin swings ". Cataloguer's note : The grils are playing on the swing , as the suspended sealskin hangs overhead . Among the indigenous people of Alaska , the seal skin was used in a variety of creative and resourceful ways . Sealskin was used as a covering for the traditional kayak . It was also cut into seal rope for harpoon line . The warm seal skin breeches were preferred gear , because they were waterproof and very warm . Other uses of the seal skin included ; storage for oil and dried meat , a float , a rifle holster , boots (kamik) , knee-high hunting boots (ulitchuiliaq) for long hunting and other extended use . Finally , the (aqaglak) , a seal skin dress , was used for celebration and special occasions . " Property of Leighton Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore , MD .
