Title by indexer . This is a half-length black and white portrait photograph of Morris Thompson (1939-2000) . Thompson an Athabascan was born and raised in the Yukon River village of Tanana . A well respected leader , he had served his community in number of ways and had held various prominent positions . During the Nixon era , he was Governor Hickel's deputy director of the rural development agency . Beginning in 1970 and through 1978 , he had served as an Area director and later as a commissioner , of U.S . Bureau of Indian Affairs . Thompson was also a member of the University Of Alaska Board Of Regents between 1989 and 1993 . After having retired from his position as President and Chief Executive Officer of Doyon Ltd ; and on a trip back from vacation in Mexico , Thompson , his wife , Thelma , and daughter , Sheryl , were all killed in the crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 , on January 31 , 2000 .
