Malamut Indians Moving Camp , Alaska
Description
Title taken from caption . "11540 -- (34) On the lower Yukon and the eastern shores of Behring Sea , the skin canoe and boat are the only native means of transportation . During the open or summer season , when it is desired to make a speedy journey , or when hunting the seal and the walrus , the Indians utilize a small boat known as a 'kiak, ' but when they have a large amount of supplies to support , or in moving their families from place to place , they employ large open boats which consists of a strong frame work of wood over which walrus skins are tightly stretched . These boats will carry several thousand pounds , and the Malamuts are at home wherever they tie up their boats. " "John Clum U.S.P.O . (United States Post Office) Copyright , 1900 , by B . L .
