(4:45 min.) (22 of 24) 22 Matanuska Colony project Assisted in shipping the Matanuska Colony . Some stuck it out ; others only lasted a few weeks . The company shipped everything : buildings , concrete , and people . Sewick worked for the Alaska Steamship Company for over thirty years . Worked his way into the regular crew . Many of the guys were "stump ranchers " -- guys who would work for the company in the summer and pull stumps in the winter . John cut wood enough for his stove and sometimes to pay property taxes . He paid $5 when he bought the property and $300 in 1986 .
