Title
Old Eliza walking in Stevens Village
Description
Title from cataloger . Photograph of Old Eliza walking in Stevens Village with a log building in the background . Narrative from photo album reads : "Here are two pictures of our famous 'Old Eliza. ' She was our first caller , early on the first morning , before breakfast . She came in without knocking , all the way thru to the kitchen . She spoke no English , but by signs and repeated 'abas ' she said her stomach was sick . I gave her a tablespoonful of undiluted spirits of camphor from the medicine chest , and she liked it ! We learned that she was an inveterate beggar and very fond of medicine , which is the only thing the government furnishes free , besides education . She always wore a pair of men's trousers under her skirt as underclothes . They had no support and it was a comical sight to see Old Liza stop anywhere on the street and readjust her trousers. "
