Title
Looking for Carpe . LaVoy , 1932 .
Description
Title from verso . Image shows members of the Lindley-Liek Expedition that made the first successful ascent of both peaks of Mount McKinley in 1932 . The men are shown looking for the body of Allen Carpe , who also climbed Mount McKinley in 1932 to perform cosmic ray research on behalf of Professor A. H . Compton of the University of Chicago . The Lindley-Liek Expedition found the camp of the Cosmic Ray Expedition empty on their descent down the mountain . The body of Carpe's colleague , Theodore Koven , was found frozen in the snow nearby . Lindley-Liek expedition members then began a search for Carpe , who presumably fell down a crevasse on Muldrow Glacier . His body was never found . Koven and Carpe are considered the first fatalities in the history of climbing Mount McKinley . Lindley-Liek Expedition members were Alfred D . Lindley , Harry J . Liek , Erling Strom and Grant Pearson . Liek (Superintendent) and Pearson (Ranger) were staff of Mt . McKinley National Park . Merl LaVoy was photographer .
